Collection refresh: Using project management to handle your library collection during a renovation

In the summer of 2018, Douglas College Library learned that the main branch of our library was finally having a renovation. As a community college serving 24,000 students, losing access to our main campus library was a significant challenge. With a year of planning and preparation, weeding 20,000 items, transferring 10,000, and storing 90,000 items, the eight-month renovation was the most significant undertaking by the library in the past decade. Using the lens of Project Management, this session will focus on the impact our renovation had on our collection. Come and learn how we managed collection development, stakeholder interests, communication with staff, faculty, and students, storage logistics, and staff scheduling to keep our project on-time and on-budget. Learn to manage different phases of your project and learn how to focus your attention and delegate responsibilities. While the renovation was a massive project, the collection was only one aspect of the entire piece. This session is a perfect way to introduce the key ideas of Project Management for a renovation, a collection review, or any project coming your way.
