Abstract
This project will be based on the global issue of food waste and unsustainable food systems. Approximately 50 million tones of food waste is generated annually in Canada where one in five people are food insecure. Not only are we wasting food, but the kinds of food that we eat, especially our meat-based diet in the Global North, is harmful in its own way to the environment. I believe this is a vital theme to research since in Canada, we live far beyond our means. My objective is to propose ideas we can implement at Douglas College, especially the cafeteria, to create important changes that can benefit ecosystems and people in need locally as well as influence larger-scale changes. I intend to research concepts such as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the Douglas College Strategic Plan 2020-2025, global/local initiatives we can draw influence from, and analyze policies that prevent/enable these issues from being solved. Poster submission was sponsored by Dr. Siobhan Ashe, (Humanities and Social Sciences Department) for course SOCIO 2270 and was presented at the New Westminster campus on April 11, 2024, for Student Research Days 2024. |
