Abstract
Due to the demands and complex nature of therapeutic recreation (TR) practice, the diverse roles experienced by practitioners can at times blur the boundaries within client-practitioner relationships. Boundaries play a vital role in enabling practitioners to maintain professionalism while fostering a strong therapeutic alliance with their clients. Navigating the subtle nuances between these demands can be challenging for both novice practitioners and those with years of experiences in the field of TR. The purpose of this study was to identify how TR practitioners (TRPs) maintained and navigated the challenges associated with boundaries when engaging with vulnerable populations. Using qualitative methods, the perspectives of seven TRPs currently working in various mental health (MH) settings, were gathered through one-on-one, semi-structured interviews. Research findings revealed three key themes: (1) what boundaries looked like within the workplace; (2) the impacts of TR profession on boundaries, associated challenges, and the healthcare system; and (3) strategies to mitigate challenges and future recommendations. Findings from this study provide valuable insights to increase awareness, facilitate discussions, and address gaps within the areas of boundary setting within the field and literature of TR. Poster submission was sponsored by Dr. Colleen Reid, (Humanities and Social Sciences Department) for course AIST 4500 and was presented at the Coquitlam campus on April 9, 2024, for Student Research Days 2024.
