Douglas College student research final project submitted as partial requirement for GSWS 2101: Gender Today (Fall 2021) course. Students Natasha Crawford and Sarah Kulewska discuss fitness apps through a feminist lens. Packaged as a positive experience fitness and weightless technology and apps are not adaptable to gender neutral and non-binary communities. They represent surveillance capitalism and users may not be aware of the level of data mining and self-surveillance that is happening when you sign up and use these technologies. More awareness is needed as not all experience positive outcomes using this technology which has addictive qualities as well. Faculty sponsor to submit this student podcast to DOOR: Dr. Jill Fellows.
