Cia guided 2022 Better Together Conference participants in considering the demands on their available attention and ability to learn, which she refers to as “Bandwidth Tax.” Cia is an expert in the field and provided a crash course in empathy with generous doses of humour and humanity. Particularly moving was the anonymous poll of “Adverse Childhood Experiences” (ACE) that were well represented among the less than 30 people in the room. It was easy to see, even in a group of relatively privileged people, how much Bandwidth Tax individuals carry, and it was easy to imagine how much more Bandwidth Tax many students may be carrying. The good news is, there is much we can do as educators and people to reduce these burdens for ourselves and others. Cia provided a toolkit of solutions for moving forward.
